TOURISTS IN N.Z.
“Take Stock Of Attitude”
The tourist industry could be an important one to New Zealand in the future, members of the Canterbury Travel Club were told at their morning tea meeting yesterday, by their speaker, Mr Willis Williams. New Zealanders should realise this, take stock of some of their attitudes to tourists and tourism, and consider what improvements could be made to make the country more attractive to tourists. What New Zealanders might put up with, in the way of poor service, including that often met with in shops, overseas visitors would not, he said.
The building of new hotels would not be any use without service to match. Litterstrewn streets showed a lack of civic pride. Mr Williams compared New Zealand with Austria. Both were countries which relied on primary produce, but had fine scenery.
Impoverished, Austria had realised the value of its tourist potential, and done all it could to make tourists comfortable and at home, he said. Mrs H. S. Fraer welcomed members. Items were given by Mr Barry Cotton, accompanied by Mrs Joan Davies, The speaker and artists were thanked by Mrs J. Erwin.
