Attraction Of Apprentices (N Z Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 18. The Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) said in Parliament tonight he hoped the margin for tradesmen would increase to the point where youngsters' would be encouraged to go into a trade. Speaking in the Address-in-Reply debate,- he said what had happened recently was not that margins for skill had been depressed, but rather that lower-paid workers were getting more Mr Shand said that in 1960 the average difference between tradesmen's and labourers’ rates was 'ls 2d. The margin last year was Is sd.

“This is the first upward trend in payment for skill since the war,” he said.
