DELAY TO LOTTERY
Attempt By Clergyman (N.Z. Press Association) NAPIER, June 18. The Rev. Duncan Jamieson. Presbyterian minister of Taradale, is seeking 100,000 signatures for a petition to Parliament to stop the Golden Mammoth lottery and .delay a decision until the issue can be debated in Parliament and •the people’s views ascertained. He said he had asked all churches in the National Council of Churches to sponsor the petition. “The lottery appeals to avarice,” he said today. “It will foster the attitude that p’ersonal gain can be achieved without effort at the expense of others,” he -said. “Because the tickets will be £l, the lottery will become a serious matter rather than an amusement. There could be serious consequences, both moral and financial, to those who take tickets,” said Mr Jamieson.
