Umpire ‘Insulted’

An umpire walked off the court during a women’s singles third round match between Russian and British girls in the London tennis championships yesterday. The umpire was Mr Geoffrey Bardsley: the players were Miss A. Dmitrieva, the U.S.S.R. No. 1, and Miss E. Starkie.

The chalk lines on the court were badly defined and both girls criticised some of the umpire's decisions.

“They were both very rude and I was not going to sit there and be insulted,” Mr Bardsley said. Another umpire took over and Miss Dimitrieva won, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.
