(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) LONDON, June 18. New Zealand’s last two representatives, L. A. Gerrard and I. S. Crookenden, were beaten in the fourth round of the London tennis championship men’s singles at Queen’s Club yesterday.
Gerrard was beaten, 6-4, 6-4, by J. E. Mandarino (Brazil), while Crookenden lost. 6-3, 13-15, 2-6, to the top Russian player, T. Lejus. Gerrard’s defeat was a surprise after his previous good wins in the tournament He was troubled by the slow court, which Mandarino relished.
The Brazilian broke Gerrard’s service at 4-3 in the first set and again in the first game of the second set to get the vital breaks. Looked A Winner
Crookenden was narrowly beaten by Lejus, after looking a certain -winner when he took the first set 6-3. In the second set he had numerous chances to win but the Russian fought back gamely. All
the fire seemed to drain out of the New Zealander in the deciding set.
0. Ishiguro, Japan’s No. 1, pulled off the biggest upset by defeating F. Froehling, the United States Davis Cup player, 7-5, 6-4. Froehling was off form. He hit a lot of shots into the net and complained that the balls were too heavy.
“They are awful,” he shouted at the umpire, after losing one point early in the second set. “Can’t you do something about it?”
The umpire shook his head and Froehling went on to drop his service and trail 1-3 In the second set. Afterwards Ishiguro agreed that the balls were heavy. “But it’s just a matter of adjusting one's play,” he added.
