Exhibition Of Photographs
An exhibition of more than 200 high-quality photographs of the activities of Outward Bound schools all over the world, including the New Zealand school, will be held in Christchurch from July 3 to July 10. - The photographs were commissioned by the British photographic firm of Ilford, .Ltd., and a local firm, H. E. Perry and Company, arranged for them come to New Zealand. After being shown in Christchurch they will make a tour of Outward Bound groups in other centres, and in September they wi|l be a star attraction at a photographers’ conference in Wanganui. The photographs, which are in both black and white and colour, were originally shown in an exhibition in London. The exhibition in Christchurch will be. held in the Durham Street Art Gallery, and will be opened on July 3 by the Mayor (Mr G. Manning). Speakers at the opening will include the president of the New Zealand Outward Bound movement (Mr R. A. McKenzie) and the warden of the New Zealand movement (Mr H. S. Thomas). It is also hoped to have a taped address from the former Governor-General of New Zealand, Lord Cobham, with possibly a few words from the Duke of Edinburgh. Most of the photographs measure about 23 inches by 16, but there are some that are even bigger. They have been acclaimed as outstanding, and include between 30 and 40 photographs of activities at the New Zealand Outward Bound school, taken during the visit of the Duke of Edinburgh. Public Lecture During the week of the exhibition, on Wednesday, July 8, the first executive director of the Outward Bound movement in New Zealand (Mr J. H. Phillipps) will show films and give a public lecture bn the movement in New Zealand and other parts of the world.
The opening night of the exhibition will be for members of the movement and invited guests only, but for the remainder of the exhibition the display will be open to the public. It will be open between 2.30 p.m. and 5 p.m. and 7.30 p.m. and 9 p.m. each day. There will he a charge of 2s for adults, but school parties, accompanied by a teacher will be admitted free.
Boys who have been through the Outward Bound school in New Zealand will be present at the exhibition to show visitors around and explain the photographs. . When the exhibition leaves Christchurch it will commence a -tour’ of other parts of New Zealand, but as yet the programme for this tour has not been decided.
