Traffic Delayed After Lewis Pass Slip
A slip on the Lewis Pass road at Riordens Bridge, seven miles from the top of the pass on the Canterbury side, held up traffic for several hours yesterday afternoon.
About 1000 yards of rock, rubble, and beech trees came down on the eastern side of the bridge in practically the same place as a slip occurred in November last year. The road was opened to one-way traffic about 6 p.m. yesterday. By that time 40 to 50 vehicles had gathered at either side of the slip. The slip covered the road for about a chain. A Ministry of Works spokesman said the slip was caused by the wetness of the ground. There had been
about 40in of rain in the area since Christmas and it rained heavily in the area on Thursday night. Work on clearing the road properly would not start until Monday. The spokesman said that as the road was sealed bulldozers could not be used. Front-end loaders and trucks had to be used.
The Westport reporter of “The Press” said the Canterbury Rugby team to play Buller at Westport today did not arrive until 10 p.m. last evening. It was to have arrived at 4.30 p.m., which would have given the team time for a training run.
A Newmans’ bus with 20 passengers from Nelson was about three hours late arriving in Christchurch.
