Home Fixtures Sought For Canterbury Team

A greater build-up to the representative season and a better balance of home and away fixtures was required in order to gain more interest in the performances of the Canterbury provincial teams, the Canterbury Men’s Basketball Association agreed on Thursday eveningThe secretary (Mr A. W. Barrett) was instructed -to write to the Wellington association, inviting it to send its top team, which won the New Zealand A grade championship, last season, to Christchurch for a match with the Canterbury A team. It was pointed out that it was Wellington's turn to visit Christchurch. The president (Mr R. S. Thomson) confirmed that there were no A grade representative fixtures scheduled to be held In Christchurch at present this season. If Wellington was not able to make the trip, it was decided that Mr Barrett should invite Hutt Valley. Nelson and Otago would not be invited as they were not due to play in Christchurch until next season by mutual agreement. Canterbury had played both teams this season on their home courts. No Matches The convener of the competitions committee (Mr M. A. McDougall) reported that there would be no inter-club matches played on June 16 or 17 as the Cowles Stadium had been

booked for a New Zealand indoor bowls tournament. After a brief discussion, the meeting decided that a possible versus probables match should be played at the stadium on June 6. This match would be the subject of the first live telecast of the season. Mr C. Anderson was appolntted manager of the Canterbury teams to travel to Timaru on June 13 for the regional tournament, the winner of which will be entitled to enter the New Zealand championships provided it also competes in the South Island titles. Australian Visit Discussion on the forthcoming tour by the Australian Olympic team and the proposed two matches in Christchurch, one against New Zealand and the other against Canterbury or the South Island, was held over as confirmation of the tour had not been received. Mr M. A. Henshall commented that in view of the Canterbury team’s weakness this season it would be better to play a South Island side against the Australians. That match could be played on Wednesday, August 19, followed by a “round robin” tournament between South Island representa' teams on the Thursday. The test match was scheduled foi the Friday. A decision will probably be made at the next meeting.
