PLANT IS IDLE
‘N.Z. Costs Too High’
(N.Z. Press Association) WANGANUI, May 26. New Zealand’s production costs were five times as high as they should be, a senior lecturer in accounting at Victoria University, Mr W. G. Rodger, said in Wanganui tonight It was necessary, tie said, to use fully the equipment which manufacturers had. Factories had machinery and equipment designed to operate 168 hours a week, but they were only being used for 40 hours of the week. “This . means that instead of the machinery producing and working 8600 hours a year, it is only working about 1470 hours, and the result is that our production costs in this country are about five times higher than they should be,’ Mr Rodger said.
“In general, I think it is right to say that we use our equipment to about 20 per cent of its potential. We should be using it far more extensively.
“To achieve this calls for far more intensive staff training,” he said.
