LOOKING AT MARKETS

N.Z. Timbers Overseas (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 22. Mr M. J. Hoffman, general manager, commercial division, of the Forest Service, left Auckland last night on a six weeks’ tour of possible overseas markets for New Zealand exotic timbers. Yesterday, Mr Hoffman said he will be following up contacts made during an industry trade mission to the East last year. Both logs and sawn timber are a valuable earner of overseas funds. In 1963 10 million cubic feet of logs and 32 million board feet of sawn timber were exported, earning £2.3 million, he said. .The west coast of North America would also be visited to gain first-hand knowledge of the factors influencing the production and export of timbers from both Canada and the United States, who are major suppliers to the Australian and Pacific markets.

“Our share of the Pacific area timber trade will always be directly related to the volume and price of timber from these two countries, and better acquaintance with their activities is essential if New Zealand is to develop these valuable markets,” said Mr Hoffman.
