GLASS PRICES Chairman Denies Agreement Broken
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 22. The company producing glass in Whangarei was complying strictly with its obligations under the terms of the published agreement made with the Government in May, 1963, Mr L. M. Papps, chairman of the executive committee of the New Zealand Window Glass Company said today.
He was commenting on criticism of the prices being charged to commercial glasshouse growers for horticultural glass. “The glass company is complying strictly with its obligations under the agreement, including the prices to be charged for horticultural and ordinary glazing quality sheet glass and the channels of distribution,” said Mr Papps.
“At no time did the company undertake to base the price increase agreed by the Government on the prices for horticultural glass supplied by Russia and China, which appear to have been used by Mr Warburton for comparison purposes. “Prices for horticultural and ordinary sheet-glass for building purposes have been increased by not more than 12J per cent on the prices for comparable glass imported from traditional sources. “The channels of distribution are specified in the agreement as the existing merchant channels."
