Residents Invited To Help Pay For Park

The purchase of the I|acre H. A. Young estate next to the Cashmere Recreation Ground is “beyond the council’s resources,” the Heathcote County Council' decided on Thursday evening. This had been suggested by nine ratepayers who wanted the estate added to the reserves. The council, after a discussion in private, resolved to ask the petitioners whether they were able to raise the bulk of the cost, which the council estimated would be well over £lO,OOO. Other contributors besides Ibe petitioners would be welcome, and notification of any gift should be made immediately to the county clerk, the council said.

The ratepayers, in their i letter, said the subdivision could be added to the recreation ground “as a garden and park entrance from Cashmere road. “We consider it would be nothing shot 1 of a tragedy if the opportunity now offering, of acquiring this land were not taken, for such a chance: if not seized now would bej gone for ever,” they said, i “The section already con-' tained many attractive trees and lies in shelter from the easterly wind. “The family of the late Mr Young have • always been keen supporters of the: recreational area, and we are! sure would enable the council I to purchase this property. “We wholeheartedly offer our support for any move the council might take to ensure that the property becomes Young Park.” The council’s town planning and reserves committee recommended the council not to entertain the idea because of the possible cost: but Cr. L. L. Smith said he

was disappointed at the recommendation. “Beautiful trees were being felled today in the subdivision, and it is a bit of al shambles already,” he said, i “I would like the committee to take another look at it “I understand some of the residents will help raise funds. Cr. E. L. Tyndall moved that the proposal be referred; to the council’s finance committee. Cr. C. M. A. Thompson said he would like the council to move into committee, as he wanted to mention the likely cost
