THIRD-YEAR STUDENTS
Problem Of
Housing
Anxiety about the provision of accommodation for the 66 teachers’ college students who will take the first thirdyear course next year was expressed by Mr A. Manning at a meeting of the Canterbury Education Board yesterday. Mr Manning said the number of students was known, and the building committee needed to know soon just what extra accommodation was needed.
Mr R. K. Milne, chairman of the teachers’ college committee, said a sub-committee would meet soon to discuss the matter. Every effort was being made to see that the accommodation was there. He said it was still certain that the Kilmore street premises would be in use for some time, and temporary buildings would be needed.
. Mr Milne said it was now publicly known that the board was acquiring land in the Waimairi area, but much of the planning for Kilmore 1 street would depend on where the motorway went. • The walls at Kilmore street [were bulging, he said, but the (board was still making every effort to build temporary accommodation there. Mrs C. C. Holland said that one of the difficulties arising from the introduction of a third year of training was that the schools did not get a number of probationary assistants they would normally get. She hoped married teachers would come back into the service to help.
