Egan pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court to a charge of false pretences and a charge of burglary, but the magistrate declined jurisdiction and sent him to the Supreme Court for sentence. His Honour said that Egan had been convicted of a large number of crimes including dishonesty. He had been released from preventive detention in 1961, and after another sentence had been released again in 1963. His Honour said he had no doubt of his duty to. protect the public from Egan’s seemingly uncontrollable offences against the public.
