Reduction This Year

The Halswell County Council rates for this year would be 1 3-16 d in the £ on capital value, said the chairman, Mr J. Y. Pethig at a meeting of the council yesterday, giving notice that he would move this rate be struck at the next meeting. In addition the drainage rate would be .06d in the £. There would be a reduction of l-8d in the £ over all for this year. It was estimated the rates would bring in £25,245, while revenue of £30,582 would come from the following sources: Cash balance at April 1, 1964, £8384; National Roads Board subsidies, £8802; licences, permits, sundries, £1300; rubbish collection charges, £1200; water charges, £3000; transfers from water loan, £3196; plant hire charged to works, £4700. Proposed expenditure is: General administration, including salaries allowances, stationery and other office expenses, legal, valuation, audit and inspectors, £9045; country roads and bridges (subsidised), £20,190; other works (unsubsidised), £2855; fire protection, £960; regional and district planning, £810; rubbish collection, £1200; water supply including loan interest and sinking fund, £4635; plant running, maintenance and renewal, £7519; contingencies, £l5OO.
