MAGISTRATE WORRIED
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 11. An unfortunate general deterioration of moral standards seemed to have developed with the welfare State, said Mr E. F. Rothwell, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court today, and this had resulted in an increase of crimes involving dishonesty. The Magistrate was sentencing three men who were last week convicted of stealing and receiving tea and various foodstuffs from Foodstuffs, Auckland, Ltd. Graham Barclay, aged 25, a driver, was sentenced to three months’ gaol on two charges of stealing foodstuffs worth £56 10s 2d; Donald George Wright, aged 23, a driver, was fined £BO on two charges of stealing foodstuffs worth £249 15s; and Graham Murray Jones, aged 28, a grocer, was fined £l5O on two charges of receiving the foodstuffs from Wright. The men had pleaded guilty. The Magistrate ordered Jones to make restitution of £36 2s 4d, and Barclay to pay £3 4s 3d.
Counsel, Mr A. J. Nixon, said £l6O had already been lodged in his trust account to meet Wright’s restitution.
