GRADUATION GOWNS

Most Will Be Hired When about 440 students of the University of Canterbury graduate next week, about 390 of them will be gowned by the Canterbury branch of the Federation of University Women. Most will also draw the new hoods from a stock of 500 held by the branch through a university grant. For years there was a shortage of academic dress because, though graduates have increased, few of them buy the proper apparel because they will seldom require it again. Teachers alone wear gowns regularly.

But, over the years, the federation has accumulated a stock of gowns and has. access to others privately owned, and all these are hired out for graduation. This year it will be necessary for the federation to borrow only about 40 gowns. The proceeds from hiring have grown with the service. Part of the funds maintains the service and the rest is used to finance research fellowships for women graduates and also help an aged refugee graduate whom the branch has “adopted” overseas.

The Canterbury branch has recently extended its activitties. It is taking a close interest in students’ living conditions and recently made a Survey. The report is now being prepared.

Co-Ed. Nurses. Mule nurses may in future be able to attend lectures with female nurses in subjets common to both courses. The idea is being considered by the North Canterbury Hospital Board.
