Quickly Out And Won Narrowly

(New Zealand Press Association)

TE AROHA, April 19. Aro won the President's Handicap at the Te Aroha Jockey Club’s mid-autumn meeting on Saturday. Dashing Star, Persian Fair, Revello, Aro and Mantovani got out of the barrier smartly. When the field had settled down, Irishman had moved to the front, followed by Mantovani, Jim’s Count and Ravenwood. Jim's Count led the field at the six and the order then was To Reign, Persian Fair, Ravenwood, Mantovani, Silver Eagle, Supreme General, Irishman and Revello. Persian Fair led at the turn from Jim’s Count, Aro, Silver Eagle and Clymon. Aro dived through on the outside and was soon well clear of Mantovani, which tried to close the gap but failed by two and a half lengths. Persian Fair was half a length away third, and then came Irishman and Jim’s Count. Bonnie Dee, Kitty Kildare and Hilldale were the first three away in the sprint, the Ngarua Handicap. After the field had travelled a furlong the order was Bonnie Dee, Udare, Kitty Kildare, Hilldale, Yonda and Royal Dragoon. Turning for home Udare took command, with Kitty Kildare making her bid in the centre of the track. Expedite and Yonda also threw out a challenge but Kitty Kildare got the verdict in a photofinish from Udare, Expedite and Yonda. The track was hard and fast.
