BRASS BAND CONTEST

31 Entries For Next Month Thirty-one bands will compete in the 1964 national brass band contest in Christchurch from May 15 to 17. Nine bands from the Christchurch area have entered in the four grades, as well as three from Auckland and Wellington, five from Dunedin, two from Timaru, and one from Te Awamutu, New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Rotorua, Levin, Blenheim, Waimate, and Invercargill. The judge will be Mr N. Henstridge, of Brisbane, and the assistant judge, Mr J. Rafferty, of Christchurch. Mr Henstridge is a former Australian and New Zealand champion cornet player and has conducted bands that have won championship honours in Australia. This year the Maryborough Federal Brass Band from near Brisbane has entered in the A Grade. This band has won the last five A grade championships in Australia. Their conductor will be Mr J. J. Kelly, who was judge at the last New Zealand contest. Another interesting entry is a band from Timaru Boys’ High School, the only school band entered. All test selections will be played in the Theatre Royal, the final A grade test being held on the night of Sunday, May 17. The quickstep contest will be held on Sunday afternoon at Lancaster Park. A street-marching contest will be held during the championships with a trophy to be presented by the Christchurch City Council. This trophy will he won outright at this contest on the morning of Friday, May 15. Among well-known bands in the contest will be the St. Kilda Band, which has won the last two contests, and the Kaikorai Band, which was second last year and won from 1952 to 1954.
