Teacher Enters Commerce Mr G. A. de Laberbis, a Papanui High School teacher well-known for his work in modern languages in Christchurch, has left for Hong Kong, where he will become the representative of a New Zealand commercial firm. He thus gives up teaching but returns to territory familiar in his youth. Mr de Laberbis was born in China when his parents (Mr and Mrs G. de Laberbis) lived there before coming to New Zealand where Mr de Laberbis, sen., became senior lecturer in French at the University of Canterbury. Mr George de Laberbis attended Tientsin University and early showed the same capacity as his father for ' languages. He spoke French, English, Chinese, and Russian.
Further language studies were undertaken at the Sorbonne. Mr de Laberbis returned to China and came to New Zealand when his parents moved. At the Papanui High School, which was among the first to introduce Russian, he had notable success with his pupils. Mr de Laberbis married a New Zealander who was born in China. They have two children. The family left for Hong Kong last week.
