EYREWELL TIMBER

Big Cargoes Expected

A considerable amount of timber from the wind-affected Eyrewell State Forest will be moved out through Lyttelton over the next two years by the Forest Service.

Yesterday’s meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board was told by its secretary-manager, Mr A. J. Sowden, that Forest Service representatives had told him that they would be wanting to move from 20 to 25 million feet of timber from the forest, five million feet of this through Lyttelton. Storage space would be needed for stacking the timber at the port before loading, and berthing facilities would be needed for two ships a month, Mr Sowden said.

The need for speedy action was emphasised by Mr J. E. Mannering. He said that the weather conditions over the next year would determine how long the timber on the ground would remain in good condition.

“The amount salvaged will depend upon the speed at which we can make the services available,” said Mr Mannering.

The Harbour Board and its harbourmaster and engineers would make every assistance available to the Forest Service, said the chairman, Mr A. A. Macfarlane.
