TV Sets, Clothes Found In Liner
(New Zealand Prgss Association)-. , AUCKLAND, March 27, Customs officers searching kitchen lockers in the liner Remuera found concealed television sets, clothing, shoes arid cigarettes amounting to . £519 in Value, the. Magistrate’s Court was told' yesterday.
A young English utility steward in the Remuera, Wil-. Ham Martin Henry Wells, admitted bding found in possession of the concealed goods. Mr W. P.' Baragwapath, for the Collector of Customs, said
officers examined a cr.ockety locker on the ship on. March .19, and shoes, cigarettes, knitwear, stockings and tobacco were found. Wells held the keys of this locker and bther
lockers. ■ , ■ The restof the goods, which included, three television sets, were found on searching the, other lockers to which thekeys, gave access. . • ■ “Knew The Risk” / ' "Mr H.. Jenner' Wily,' S’.Si.,' fined Wells £25, or in default of immediate payment, 29. days’imprisonment. “You well knew the risk you ran,’’’said Mr. Wily. “The goods.will.ail be forfeited.” Another man, third baker on the vessel, Ronald James Simpson, was also fined £25, or gaol in default, Simpson admitted being found in possession of 92" pairs of jeans—dutiable or restricted goods—concealed in the' Remuera.
Mr Baragwanath said the jeans were found in Simpson’s locked room while he was away.
