Obituary

MR C. E. Foweraker Mr Charles Ethelbert Foweraker, who was director of the School of Forestry at Canterbury University College from 1930 to 1934, and was associated with biology there from 1914 until his retirement in 1951, died at his home in Cashmere this week. His lifelong interest was botany. Mr Foweraker, who was born at Waimate in 1886, became a pupil teacher in 1904 and was first assistant at the Waimate High School from 1910 to 1912, when, 'after graduation, he took his master of arts degree with first-class honours in botany and was appointed junior lecturer in botany. After service in the First World War he was awarded a New Zealand Expeditionary Force scholarship and spent a year on refresher studies at Downing College, Cambridge, and returned as lecturer in botany in 1920. When a forestry department was opened at the college in 1924 Mr Foweraker became lecturer in charge, and he was director after the department was constituted a special school of the University of New Zealand in 1930. When the School of Forestry was closed in 1934 because of withdrawal of the Government grant Mr Foweraker resumed his work as senior lecturer in the biology department. Between 1920 and 1930 he was special research officer for the Forest Service, concentrating chiefly on the rimu forests of Westland.

The Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture elected Mr Foweraker a fellow in 1948 and in 1951 he was appointed an associate of honour. He was chairman of the Canterbury council of the institute, and from 1926 to 1943 was secretary and treasurer of the Riccarton Bush trustees. He was also a member of the Arthur’s Pass National Park Board. Mr Foweraker is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter.
