CONTROLLED PRICE LIST

Need Seen For Review

The price control list was obsolete and was in sore need of being reviewed, said the secretary of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association (Mr R. T. Alston) yesterday. “It is timely that a number of these items be reviewed because they are in plentiful and competitive supply,” he said. Mr Alston was commenting on a revised list of goods and services supplied by the Department of Industries and Commerce.

The price control, said Mr Alston, was more or less a war-time measure. A number of items were subsidised and these, of course, would have to remain under control. But, on the other hand, most of the building materials which were still under control, ended up in buildings which were not under control.

“No useful purpose can be served in keeping these under such controls,” he said. The list included, inter alia, drugs and related commodities, fertilisers, and lime when sold in lots of less than lewt, bread, butter, Cheddar cheese under four months old, cigarettes, fresh cream, eggs, flour, golden syrup and treacle, fresh milk, oatmeal and rolled oats. Also on the list are imported oranges, sugar, tea, yeast, kerosene, various classes of hardware, cars, trucks, tyres and tubes, timber and timber charges and some types of building and construction materials.
