First Tie In 40 Years For Life-Saving Shield

For the first time, there has I been a tie in the Monica 'Thacker Shield for secondary I schoolgirls’ life-saving. The four-girl teams’ competition this year was shared by Avonside Girls’ High School and Cashmere High School girls. Although there might not be any women willing to admit remembering the start of the competition, it has now been held for more than 40 years. The winning teams scored 361.25 points each, and third place went to Christchurch Technical College girls, with

356.25 points. The winning teams were.—

Avonside: Joan Roberts, Diane Gillespie, Pamela Sykes, Susan Buick, and the instructor was Narite Plesovs. Cashmere: Lyn Cox, Ifillary Wilmshurst, Leonie Macfarlane, Susan Watson, with the instructor Christine Bullock.

The boys’ competition for the Sir John Hall Shield was won by Christchurch West High School with 374.50 points, from Christchurch Boys’ High School (337.50) and Rangiora High School (334.75). The winning team was Donald Cross, Paul Carpenter, Russell Amer, Ross Seddon, with the instructor John Stringer.
