SEA CADETS WIN BELL

Top Score In Commonwealth A Christchurch sea cadet miniature rifle team has earned the distinction of being top scorer this year in the Navy League’s Commonwealth postal shoot. This is the first time the competition has been won by a New Zealand team.

The winning team was from the Christchurch training ship Steadfast. It scored 774 points out of a possible of SOO. putting itself two points ahead of its nearest rival. The trophy for the competition is a ship’s bell, normally presented to the winning team by the Duke of Edinburgh.

The Dominion secretary of the Navy League (Mr" C. Dean) said in Wellington last evening that the bell was a fairly large one. Arrangements would have to be made for it to be brought to New Zealand and for its presentation to the t.s. Steadfast team.

The shoot is arranged each year by the Canadian Miniature Rifle Association for all Commonwealth sea cadets. About 2000 teams compete in the first elimination round. Six New Zealand teams competed, including two from Christchurch. Each team comprises eight cadets of ages ranging from 13 to 18 years.
