Bright Cricket Planned On N.Z. World Tour
(yew Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON, March 23. Bright cricket would be the objective on the New Zealand Cricket Council’s self-supporting Canadian and world tour this year, said the captain, B. Mcßurney (Waikato), today.
Mcßurney. who farms at i Te Poi, near Matamata, was commenting on the prospects for the team, which was announced today by the council. ” The tour would be a marvellous experience for the young players and nothing f>ut good could come out of it, said Mcßurney. The team, which will leave Auckland on May 29 and will play in eight different countries during its three-month tour, comprises:— B. Mcßurney (Waikato), «ged 38, captain: M. J. Aim (Wellington), 24, vice-captain; C. T. M. Beach (Thames Valley), 22: C. W. Buttar (Central Otago), 20: R. S. Cunis (AucklandI, 23; S. J. Edwards
(Wellington), 20; R. A. Hopkins (North Canterbury), 22; I. R. Mason (Hutt Valley), 21; G. T. McConnell (Hutt Vali ley), 26: S. G. McKnight (Central Otago), 29; D. H. Payton (Wairarapa), 19; P. W. Scott (Auckland), 23; R. B. Simons (Bay of Plenty), 28; K. J. I Wadsworth (Nelson), 17; R. J. ! Wealleans (Waikato), 22. Plunket Experience Batsmen of Plunket Shield experience are Mason, who J has played for Wellington, and McKnight, former Otago opener. Others close to Plun!ket Shield status and prominent in under 23 sponsored tournaments, are Aim. Beach, Buttar, Payton and Scott. The attack is headed by the j New Zealand pace bowler, I Cunis, supported by the WaiI kato medium-pacer, Weal- ! leans, and an in-swinger from j Wellington. Edward. McCon- | nell has been Wellington’s Plunket Shield off-spinner for
four seasons, and Simons has been a successful left-arm slow bowler in minor association games. The side has two wicketkeepers in Wadsworth and Hopkins, both of whom are also batting prospects. The team will'play in Fiji, Los Angeles, San Francisco, 13 matches in Canada, New York, Philadelphia and Washington, spend a week in Bermuda, 17 days in England, play two matches against services’ elevens in Western Germany, -in Kuwait and in Malaysia. In the course of its tour the team will also visit France, Switzerland, Italy, Lebanon, India and Hong Kong.
