SENIOR TITLE DULY WON BY ST. ALBANS
Best Double Of Season By J. H. M. Dawson
St. Albans, top team since the fifth round ended, duly won the senior cricket championship and “The Press” pennant on Saturday, when the competition closed with a series of one-day games.
It was St. Albans’s first win since the 1956-57 season, and such was the even standard of the other teams, St. Albans finished six points clear although the team scored only four points in the final three rounds.
A flutter of excitement came from the match in which Sydenham met WestUniversity. With the last batsmen in, WestUniversity scored nine from two balls to take the bonus and firstinnings points.
There was little interest in the championship matches with the result so nearly certain. Autumn leaves and the long afternoon shadows saddened the handful of enthusiasts who watched the play at Hagley; but for at least one player, it was a memorable occasion. J. H. M. Dawson of Old Collegians enjoyed the season’s best all-round performance. After taking seven
wickets against Old Boys, he scored 75, easily the top score. B. F. Hastings (West-Uni-versity) added lustre to an already remarkable club season with another half-century. D. L. Gallop (Sydenham), D. H. Hicks (Old Boys) and D. I Cameron (East Shirley) each took five wickets. Results.— Old Boys 185 beat Old Collegians 160 by 25 runs on the first innings.
West Christchurch-Uni-versity 185 beat Sydenham 184 by one run on the first innings. Lancaster Park 202 for nine declared drew with St. Albans 49 for four. Riccarton 138 for eight declared beat East Christ-church-Shirley 122 by 16 runs on the first innings. Final competition points were:
Old Boys and East-Shirley were each awarded seven points for the round in which East-Shirley played a pro-motion-relegation match and Old Boys played a friendly match
