Close Call For West

Three attractive and aggressive innings, by W. Thomson, D- L. Gallop and R. Thomas, failed to give Sydenham a good enough score to beat WestUniversity. All three batsmen hit the ball hard, but each one lost his wicket before his batting had given full value. Later the captain, B. Salt, played an innings more diverting than elegant. For WestUniversity the left-hander, I. HounselL swung the ball well, and A. C. Timpson’s spin was dangerous. At one stage Timpson had three catches dropped from consecutive balls, a sort of nightmare hat-trick. P. Thomas, although a little Inaccurate, bowled with considerable life when West-Uni-versity began. G. T. Dowling almost hit a 6 to fine leg off one bouncer, and in the same over two others brought eight runs in extras. B. F. Hastings, not quite at his best at the start, batted with more authority later and nearly all the others did enough to keep their side in sight of victory. But from 146 for five the score descended to 169 for nine, with

18 runs still needed. Hounsell and P. Sharp picked up runs steadily, and the end came with dramatic speed. P. Thomas bowled to Hounsell, there was a single and four over throws, and next ball Sharp, with a magnificent shot off the back foot, hit through the covers to the boundary for West to take the first innings lead and the bonus points by the narrowest of margins. The umpires were Messrs L. C. Moore and G. Aitken. Scores:— SYDENHAM
