Sex In Books

Sir, —The Inangahua County Council is reported by you to be perturbed at the number of books dealing with sex that creep on to the Reefton Public Library shelves. Might your columns be thrown open to constructive criticism? It is hard enough for the distinguished members of the Indecent Publications Tribunal to plot the boundary between the printable and the unprintable. How much harder the task of whatever tribunal is to decide what is to go into the guaranteed-free-from-sex shelf—the play, “Journey’s End”; Sherlock Holmes, with only a few cuts; Robinson Crusoe, but only the island part of his story. Any further contributions will be gratefully received.—Yours, etc., MRS GRUNDY. March 19, 1964.
