PITCHES NOT COVERED
Aust Request Rejected (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) LONDON, March 20. The Australian cricket team to tour England this year will have to play without the pitches being fully covered. The M.C.C. advisory committee, meeting at Lord’s rejected an Australian proposal that pitches should be fully covered for all their matches. The committee ruled that regulations that existed last season would operate again for test matches.
These say the pitch can be covered before the start, each night and during the day when sufficient rain has fallen to present further play. For matches against county sides this would be a matter of agreement between the two parties, the committee said. The advisory committee's view is that pitches affected by rain can provide interesting cricket. Against that the Australians have had their way over the calling of “throwers." This season in county cricket suspect bowlers will be reported to the M.C.C. The Australians have not agreed to this.
