CLAIM MADE FOR NIKORA
Scanlan Not Title-Holder "The Press" Special Service WELLINGTON, Mar. 20. The Tuna Scanlan-Gomeo Brennan Empire middleweight title fight should not have taken place, according to Mr Wally Baker, trainer of Earl Nikora, holder of the New Zealand and Australian middle-weight titles. Mr Baker claimed yesterday the British Boxing Board of Control probably did not know Scanlan was not the New Zealand champion when it sanctioned his Empire title bout. Scanlan outpointed the defending champion, Brennan, of the Bahamas, on a split decision. “Nikora holds the New Zealand title, and Scanlan's got a duty to fight him,” said Mr Baker.
“We accepted a fight with Scanlan in Wellington in December for a £7OO purse or a percentage, whichever was the greater, but the Scanlan camp refused the bout. “Then we agreed to fight Scanlan in Dunedin. Scanlan’s handlers agreed, but then they pulled out. “Nikora would walk through anything Scanlan threw. Scanlan would last 10 rounds if he were lucky.”
