RECORD RUN. —Earlier this month a Cortina travelled 500 miles at-an average of 69.54 m.p.h. in one night at Christchurch Airport It ran against light aircraft in the Christchurch to Masterton air race, and, on a special power-to-weight handicap, unofficially won the race. The only parts of the car replaced or altered during the run were the wheels, and -no oil was used. TOP: the volunteer pit crew rushes into action around the car as it comes in for a driver change. At the front one man jacks the vehicle up as others change; the wheels, clean the windscreen, drivers change over, and, out of sight more fuel is pumped into the tank. BOTTOM: The three, drivers who drove in turns throughout the night are congratulated by the managing director of the firm which sponsored the run. From left: Messrs O. A. Hutchinson, R. Rutherford, D. Hayward, and B. Walker. Mr Walker put up the fastest lap of the run at an average of nearly 74 m.p.h.
