INDUSTRIAL LAND

Council Urged To Buy

“The council might do well to buy industrial land and develop it,” the Heathcote County Council engineer (Mr J. McF. Hamilton) suggested to the council last evening. The council was discussing a statement by the chairman

(Mr J. C. Holliss) regretting that there had been little industrial development in the county over the year. Cr. W. B. Laing asked where the money was coming from.

Mr Holliss: Borrow it.

Cr. Laing: Money doesn’t grow on trees. If a company wants to come in. it will. Councillors discussed whether the land zoned as industrial in the county was actually the most suitable, and whether there was enough of it Cr. C. D. Le Comte said the council should apply for rezoning only if this were shown to be needed. At present, he thought, the county had enough industrial land.

Mr Holliss said that if a company wanted to build on land not already zoned industrial the county should support the company in trying to get the zoning changed. »
