Motor Assembly Plant On Wooldridge Road Sought
In spite of the Town and Country Planning Appeal Board’s decision that land in the Wooldridge road area should not be zoned industrial, the Waimairi County Council last evening decided that an application by Dominion Motors, Ltd., for the establishment of an assembly plant at 240 Wooldridge road should be advertised for objections as a conditional use in a rural zone. Cr. A. E. Wagner said he was opposed to the proposal as the board had opposed the area being used for industry. He considered the only industrial concerns which could be permitted as a conditional use in a rural zone under the Code of Ordinances were “machinery workshops” and “for any industry which is ancillary to farming of any kind.”
The chairman (Mr J. I. Colligan) said he considered the proposed assembly plant would be a machinery workshop and furthermore, was ancillary to farming as the intention of the company was to assemble tractors, trucks and other equipment of an agricultural nature.
He outlined special conditions which should apply to any application being granted. Cr. V. P. Rabbitte said he supported the proposal as the firm intended to provide work for about 450 persons.
