ANOTHER TO TACTILE
Italian Cup In Melbourne (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE. March 15. The New Zealand four-year-old pacer Tactile won the £l5OO Italian Cup brilliantly at the Melbourne Show Grounds last night. Tactile started equal favourite at 4/1 with Waitaki Hanover. He scored by one yard from the Sydney mare Tarcoola with Pipirikl. another In-ter-Dominion finalist, four yards away third. Waitaki Hanover, attempting his third win in eight days, was not well driven by P. Wells. Early In the race he was trailing Tactile, but with a mile to go Wells sprinted him three wide to join the leaders Opal Chief and Daep Tan, Waitaki Hanover wilted in the final stages. Pipirikl sprinted clear of the field with two furlongs to Jo and got a break of at least 0 yards on Tactile. He began to weaken at the furlong a id Tactile, coming with a powerful run. gathered him in quickly then safely held off a late challenge from Tarcoola. R. M. Cameron drove Tactile with splendid judgement although he confessed later that when Pipirikl sprinted so fast at the two he had some doubts whether Tactile could overhaul him. All three place-getters tn the cup are New Zealand-bred. Tactile, which has now won five races in Melbourne this season, is well on the way to creating a stake winning record for a four-vear-old In Australia and New Zealand His earnings are getting close to the £20.000 mark. Present plans are for him to run in the £lOOO Minor and the £2OOO South Australian Trotting Club Cup before going to Svdney for the £5OOO Lord Mayor's Cup at Harold Park early in April. The New Zealand mare Lucky Song, which gave A. K. Holmes his first Australian success when she won at Shepparton on Friday night, could run only fourth in the Rome Handicap last night.
