HOUSE ON FIRE
Family Loses Possessions
The back portion of a threebedroomed State house at 5 Baynes street, Burwood, was destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon. All the interior ar.d contents of the wooden, til.d-roof, single-storey house were severely damaged. The house is occupied by Mr J. Wesley, a railway worker, and his family, but nobody was at home when the fire broke out. The cause of the fire is unknown. When a neighbour noticed the fire, it had already cracked windows and the flames were coming through the roof. The fire brigade received the alarm at 3.53 p.m. and engines from the St. Albans and Headquarters stations were at the house within six minutes. Two hoses were used, and the fi e was quickly put out. Th" fire apparently began in a bedroom at the back of the house. Another bedroom, the kitchen, and washhouse were destroyed, the contents being ruined. The back part of the roof was destroyed.
There was a gusty nor’wester at the time. Mr and Mrs Wesley and their two school-age children are staying with relatives.
