FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—A deep depression south-east of New Zealand maintains a strong west to south-west airstream over the country. A cold front in this stream over the Tasman Sea is moving quickly eastward to pass over the country during the day. Forecast:

Canterbury.—Moderate variable winds, northerly directions predominating; weather fine at first, but cloud gradually increasing, with rain in the alps and scattered light falls developing elsewhere; mild day temperatures. Outlook: cloudy, with scattered light showers.

Buller and Westland.—Light to moderate northeasterly winds predominating, skies mainly overcast, with rain becoming heavy at times; moderate temperatures. Outlook: cloudy, with scattered showers.

Marlborough and Nelson.—Moderate to fresh west to north-west winds, strong in exposed places; weather fine at first, but cloud gradually increasing and the weather becoming showery. Temperatures moderate. Outlook: unsettled, with showers at times.
