CREEKS AND STREAMS
A.A.C. Position Stated The naming of geographical features was not the prerogative of the Automobile Association (Canterbury), and its signposts indicating their presence invariably quoted the titles obtained from an authoritative source, said the general manager of the A-A.C. (Mr E. S. Palliser) yesterday, commenting on a letter written by Mr J. H. E. Schroder to the National Geographic Board. In his letter, reported in “The Press” yesterday, Mr Schroder proposed that the board should “formally undo its earlier action” in its definitions of streams and creeks “leaving the Automobile Association unsupported so that it may be more easily induced to forget its philologically and historically unwarranted purpose of converting creeks into streams.” Mr Palliser said that in the case of highways the authoritative source was usually the Ministry of Works, which acted on behalf of the National Roads Board, the road-controlling authority. “I can only regret that the tenor of Mr Schroder’s letter and the publicity given to it, would make it appear that the A. A. (Canterbury) is party to a controversy in this relatively minor matter, whereas such is, of course, not the case,” Mr Palliser said.
“The publication of Mr Schroder’s letter was the first official intimation received by the association of his views on this matter. Subsequently however, the association has received an official communication from him, in reply to which he will be advised that his abjections will be the subject of immediate inquiry through the road-controlling authority, whose directions will be followed by the association.”
