1100Gns Top Price At Yearling Sales

A colt and a filly shared the top price of llOOgns at the annual national sales of standard*bred yearlings at the Addington Showgrounds yesterday. The top colt, offered on behalf of Roydon Lodge Stud, Ltd., Yaldhurst, was one of the first crop sired by the Adios horse, Thurber Frost. He was purchased by the Sydney trainer, P. J. Hall.

The Thurber Frost colt, a solid youngster, ■was out of Spangled Scott, the dam also of Jay Ar and other winners. A half-brother by U. Scott to this colt topped the sales 12 months ago at 1300 gns.

Mr E. K. Frost, of Perth, went to llOOgns for a filly by Smokey Hanover from Melody Maid offered on behalf of Messrs S. R. and C. C. Messervy, of New Brighton, who have enjoyed considerable success at the sales with the progeny of Melody Maid and her daughters. Mr Frost had a keen duel with the Sydney trainer, P. J. Hall, who withdrew after he had bid 1050gns. Melody Maid has left a host of winners, including Maestro’s Melody, Swing Set, Sand Blast, Tranquility, Hit I Song. Tranquil Scott and | Tarcoola, all of which were ■ successful in Australia. Two other lots realised lOOOgns. Mr J. S. Shaw, of Riccarton, acting as agent, went to this price to secure a fine-looking black colt by Hal Tryax from Bright Dene, offered on behalf of Mr A. R. Aitchison, of Palmerston.l This was the only colt by I Hal Tryax in the sales. Mr Shaw also bought the only| two fillies offered by this sire. He paid 825gns for a filly by Regalia offered on behalf of! Mr L. A. Williams, of Green-1 park, and 560gns for one! from Traveller, offered on | behalf of Mr P. P- Roberts, ■ of Oamaru. A splendid colt by Garrison Hanover from La Lilly offered on behalf of Mr R. S. Thornley, of Greenpark, was sold to the Sydney trainer. W. Picken, for lOOOgns. This colt, a half-brother to Goldina and other fine winners, was the only purchase made during the day by Picken, who has usually operated freely. Big Price Bidding was keen for a chestnut colt by Meadow Chief from Little Doubt, ranking as a brother to two classic winners in Wildwood Chief and For Certain, offered on behalf of Mr W. A. Prendergast, of Hyde. Bidding stopped at 1300gns, at which price he was passed in. The reserve on the colt was laOOgns. Bidding throughout the day was rather lifeless, but whenever a youngster by a fashionable sire or from a mare which had left good winners, was produced, there was keen Interest. It has become increasingly obvious at the last few sales that buyers are not greatly interested in the progeny of stallions not in the top three or four on the sires’ list. During the day 70 of the 110 lots offered were sold for a total of 22.565gn5, an average of 322gns. slightly better than last year’s average of 318gns. The figure was w r ell below the record average of 366Jgns in Australian buyers took 30 lots for 11,640gn5, an average of 388gns. Last year they bought 20 lots at an average price of 348gns. Parramatta Livestock Agency, Ltd., Sydney, acting as agents, bought 13 of the lots sold to Australia at an average price of 317jgns. The agency bought on behalf of a number of buyers who were in attendance at the sales. Mr Shaw, who acts for both Australian and New Zealand buyers, was the most active New Zealand bidder. He bought five lots for 3115gns, an average of 623gns. Roydon Lodge Stud was again the most successful vendor, selling four lots at an average price of 705gns. The selling was shared by three auctioneers. Messrs T. Alexander, P. J. Kelly and H. D. Matson who for most of the day had to work hard to attract much interest in anything but well-bred lots. The sale was conducted by the National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand, Ltd., and Wright. Stephenson and Company. Ltd. Sales of lOOgns or more, were:— On account Dr. J. J.
