Waikato Horses Do Best At Trentham

"The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON, March .12. Final gallops at Trentham suggested Waikato stables may take most of the money in the first leg of the 1.A.8. double on Saturday. Llanelly ran a fast mile, On Purpose went well over the same distance, and Senor, though he was not asked. to go fast, made a big impression by his appearance and the manner in which he worked. Waikato will also have a good chance of completing the main double with Good Day Peter, which was easily the fastest and best sprinter. Galloping was on the course proper, which was soft. Just over two inches and a half of rain had fallen in two days up till this morning and the ground will be easy for Saturday. The weather is clearing and there is a strong wind. Llanelly (Stokes) started from the mile and was joined by Antao (Eastwood) near the six furlongs. Llanelly finished in Imin 40 2-Ssec, the last halfmile In 53 2-ssec and the three furlongs in 39 2-ssec. Antao finished two lengths ahead. Allowing for the conditions, it was as good g gallop as

Llanelly ran last week before she won the Chalmers Handicap. Antao went better than she did last week before winning the Tinakori Hack Handicap. Straight Irish (Riordan) and On Purpose (L. W. Ford) were set an easier task and took Imin 51sec, the last half-mile in Msec and the three furlongs in 40sec. On Purpose went keenly. Senor was given pacework on the trial grass and then, ridden by J. P. Riordan, he sprinted three furlongs on the course proper in 38 2-ssec. He is the best-weighted of the Chalmers Handicap runners and has done exceptionally well since that race. Commodore Roberts (A. Ford) started from the mile, but did not have much pace on early. He went faster from the five furlongs and came from the four in 52 2-ssec and from the three brilliantly in 37 2-ssec. Hushaway (Stokes) was not going as well as Gay Filou (Riordan) after seven furlongs in Imin 39 3-saec, the last three in 39 3-saec. Gay Filou galloped attractively and even under 9-0 will be hard to beat in the Hutt Handicap. Tart (Lundy) .shaded Shady (B. T. Jones) after an easy

half-mile in 54 l-ssec. Tart went well enough to be given a good chance in the Rlmu Heighweight. Easily the best over a sprint was Good Day Peter (Landers) which beat Careen (Eastwood) by four lengths in 49 l-ssec, the last three in 3d 4-ssec. Good Day Peter took an early lead that Careen, a sluggish worker, could not reduce. Good Day Peter went boldly and appears to have improved during the week. The St. Leger candidate Clayton King (Riordan) was galloping strongly after a mile with Count Pedro (Stokes) and Full Course (B. T. Jones). They took Imin 49 l-saec, going fast early over the first three furlongs in 37 4-teec and running the last three on heavier ground in 39 4-ssec. A good stayer which is at home in easy ground, Clayton King has a good chance in a weakened St. Leger field. Count Pedro also galloped well to finish almost on terms and for a high-weight horse carrying the heaviest weight. Full Course did well to finish a length behind. Fleldmaster (B. T. Jones) and Clnnxman (J. P. Riordan) beat Caromor (Eastwood) by three lengths after a mils te imfe 49

***• u,t furlongs in 40 l-Ssoc.

Fieldmaster, which had the heaviest weight, and Cmnaman both went keenly, but Cammor, though he started behind them and was wide on the turn, did not impress as much. He might need another race. Sand Boy (Eastwood) covered half a mile steadily in 51 3-5 sec, the last three furlongs in 38 l-ssec. Shipmate (Stokes) galloped five furlongs, the last “ ur in 55sec and the three in 40sec. He was not asked for speed and the trial appeared to be mainly to see how he would handle the going. April Love (Riordan) covered half a mile in 53 3-ssec, the last three furlongs in 40sec. She has improved since running fourth last week and should appreciate the extra furlong. Dacron (Lenders), a good worker, and Lamyn (Riordan), a lazy one. were together after five furlongs in Imin lOsec, the last three in 39 3-ssec. Dacron was doing the better. Gorwan (Wilkie) galloped six furlongs, the last four in 55 2-ssec and the three in 40 2-5 sec. Gold Ruth (Stokes) also galloped six furlongs, the list five in Imin lliaec and the three In 39sec Scarpa (Eastwood) and
