A. H. EASTWOOD MAY RIDE BEST DOUBLE
The Riccarton light-weight jockey, A. H. Eastwood, has been engaged to ride Lady York and Champ, which will be a heavilysupported combination for the double at Oamaru tomorrow.
Lady York ran a mile brilliantly on a rain-affected track in training at Riccarton yesterday, and this trial might assure her of favouritism for the first leg, the Papakaio Handicap. A form runner down in the weights, Lady York ran strongly in the hands of her race rider yesterday to record Imin 45 3-ssec for her mile, and 51 l-ssec for the last half mile. Lady York has shown her best form on firm tracks, and any drying in the ground at Oamaru will help her. In Form Zinder, Sailorman and the former North Islander, Audalusia, are other form runners in the Papakakio Handicap. Zinder won the New Zealand St. Leger this time last year. In the meantime he has changed hands and has won two races in the Tutton colours. One of those wins was In the President’s Handicap at Oamaru on January 2. One of his rivals that day was Lady York, and she finished fast for third. Zinder has appeared only once since that win and goes into this race without a race since January 4. This could weigh against him, as he is a sluggish worker in training. Lady York has had two races since she last met Zinder, and she won one of them—the mile Kumara Handicap at Kumara on February 22. Andalusia, a strongly-finishing winner over nine furlongs at Cromwell, and Marwon, a good third against the sprinters at Motukarara, are in the lower half of the handicap and help to make the race look fairly open. Four In a Row Champ will probably be a dominating favourite for the Stewards’ Handicap, second leg of the double. There has been no stopping him in his summer racing and he won four races “straight.” If anything he was improving with each race, and he made an exhibition of his rivals first time out in open company in the Midsummer Handicap at Riccarton last month. Royal Estate, a good fourth In one of his races at Trentham in March, will probably be Otago’s best, and the consistent John Jameson could carry ft off for Washdyke If Champ runs below form.
Deladana’s trainer, M. J. Wadley, said yesterday that he would probably reserve the
