JAPANESE SURPRISE
N.S.W. Boxers Overwhelmed (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, March 12. New Zealand’s amateur boxers will have a gruelling pre-Olympic trial against the touring seven-man Japanese team, scheduled to appear in Wellington. The Japanese made a sensational impression at the Sydney Stadium last night, winning five of seven bouts inside the distance against a New South Wales team. The Japanese exposed the gulf between Australian amateur boxing standards and the heights they will need to reach to make any sort of showing at the Tokyo Olympics. The national amateur boxing secretary (Mr A. Tunstall), in praising the Japanese team, said: “They are splendid boxers, superbly fit and technically as skilful as professionals. “I thought they were all clean-cut fighters and, despite their youth, quite experienced.” All seven of the Japanese are university students. Their educated fists gave New South Wales boxers a lesson and the string of knockdowns stunned the stadium crowd.
