BRENNAN IS RANKED 10
Fighters Back To Gym (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, March 12. The West Indian boxer, Gomeo Brennan, who defends his Empire middleweight title against Tuna Scanlan at Carlaw Park, Auckland, on Saturday, has been ranked tenth in this weight division by the World Boxing Association. This is Brennan’s first world ranking, although the authoritative “Ring” magazine last month listed him in class A among the world middle-weights. Both Brennan and Scanlan returned to the gymnasium yesterday to resume pre-fight preparations after it was decided to postpone their fight from Thursday to Saturday. Brennan did the equivalent of five rounds in shadow sparring and skipping, while Scanlan sparred four rounds with the welter-weight, Heinie Forsythe, who is fighting the professional preliminary on Saturday. “I’m packing a little more work into Tuna,’’ said his trainer, Mr R. Grimmer. “I’ll build him up a little and then taper him off again.”
Scanlan was one of 81 people who became naturalised New Zealanders in a ceremony held in the Auckland Town Hall night. Scanlan, who was born in Apia, Western Samoa, wanted to ensure the validity of his challenge against Brennan for the Empire title.
