£l000 FOR HOCKEY
Tourney To Be Sponsored
The annual hockey tournament for top provincial teams is to be sponsored by Rothmans (N.Z.), Limited, according tc an announcement made by Mr J. G. Leggat, chairman of the management committee of the New Zealand I ockey Association, in Christchurch yesterday. Negotiations have been going on for some time between the association and Rothmans, resulting in the sponsorship of th"> tournament which would mean £lOOO per year to hockey. Last year the tournament was held in Christchurch and the winner received the Challenge Shield, but there is a proposal to be considered at the annual meeting of the association next month that the Challenge Shield be played for again on a chall°nge basis. If this proposal is approved it will not in any way affect the Rothmans hockey tournament which would then be the subject of a separate trophy. This year’s tournament is set down to be played at Wellington, commencing on Tuesday, June 2, with an < ympic trial match to be played at the conclusion of the tournament. Mr Leggat said the action of the sponsors would materially assist the promotion of hockey at the national level.
Title Defence.—Sugar Ramos, of Cuba, will defend his world feather-weight boxing title against Floyd Robertson, of Ghana, the Empire champion, in Accra on May 2. It will be the first world boxing championship to be held in Ghana.—(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter.)
