‘THE GROUP ' WITHDRAWN
Vice Squad Interested (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, Match 12. The prize-winning novel “The Group” by Mary McCarthy has been withdrawn from sale in Victoria because the book is under consideration by the Victorian vice squad. Sergeant M. Miller of the vice squad, said today, officers from his department had obtained several copies of the book. “We are reviewing it to determine, under Victorian law, if it can be classed as obscene literature,” Sergeant Miller said. He said there were two chapters in which the squad was particularly interested. It was common practice for stocks of books to be withdrawn when they were under vice squad review, he said. “The Group” is a story of eight young women during their high school and later life. It won a book society choice award and received very good reviews in the United States, Britain and Australia.
