Lodge Not Candidate (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) SALEM (Oregon), Mar. 11. Mr Henry Cabot Lodge, who swept to victory in yesterday’s new Hampshire primary on a “write-in” vote, said in a cable received in Salem today that he is not a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination. Mr Lodge cabled from Saigon, South iVetnam, where he is United States Ambassador: “I am not a candidate and I am precluded by foreign service regulations from engaging in any political activity.” He sent the cable to Oregon’s Secretary of State (Mr Howell Appling) who had informed the envoy that his name had been entered on the ballot for the State’s primary on May 15. Mr Appling said Mr Lodge would remain on the ballot. He said an official withdrawal form, on which Mr Lodge could state that he was not and did not intend to become a candidate, had not been returned.
Mr Lodge said in reply to reporters’ questions in Saigon today he had no intention' of resigning of returning to the United States in the near future.
Asked if he was happy about the result of the New Hampshire primary, he said: “Of course it is a great honour and great compliment.”
