VAIONT DAM DISASTER
Town Seeking Damages (N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) BELLUNO (Italian. Alps), February 27. The flood-wrecked town of Longarone yesterday opened a suit for 5000 million lire (£2,875,000) damages before the Civil Tribunal against the National Electricity Board (E.N.E.L.) and the Adriatic Power Company (S.A.D.E.). Longarone and several villages were wrecked and more than 2000 people killed in October when a giant landslide crashed into the reservoir of the Vaiont dam, sending an enormous flood wave through the area. The dam was built by S.A.D.E., which was later nationalised with the other power companies in Italy. At today’s, hearing, the electricity board objected to Longarone's claims, arguing that damages had already been set aside by the State. Both E.N.E.L. and S.A.D.E. declined responsibility. The case was adjourned to April 8.
