(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Feb. 18 Small increases in the number of registered unemployed during the months of December 1963 and Jant.ary I9r>4 were reported today by the Minister of Labour (Mr Shand).
The figures were 520 (407 men and 113 women) at December 31, 1963, and 600 ( 487 men and 113 women) at January 31. 1964. compared with 435 ( 349 men and Bt> women* at November 30, 1963, At the same time last year the figures were, November 822, December 849. January 909. An increase in the number of unemployed at that time of the year is not unusual, said Mr Shand. It can be attributed to reluctance on the part of employers to engage new staff before and during the holiday period. Over the same periods tha number receiving unemployment benefit rose from 247 at the end of November to 278 at the end of December, and 288 at the end of January. The number of registered unemployed by industrial districts at the end of January 1964 were:— Whangarei 22. Lower Hutt 11, Auckland 143. Wellington 18, Hamilton 66. Blenheim 1, Tauranga 21, Nelson 1. Rotorua 23. Greymouth 15. Gisborne 17. Christchurch 105, Napier 22. Hastings 10, Timaru 3, New Plymouth 30, Oamaru 2, Wanganui 20. Dunedin 30, Palmerston North 17, Invercargill 14, Masterton 9. '
