Many Rams Not Sold At

Ashburton Fair

Once again there was an over-supply of sheep at the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s ram and stud ewe fair, which was held at the show grounds yesterday.

This, with one of the smallest galleries of buyers for many years, made for a disappointing sale. About half the yarding was passed in.

Quality rams, especially in the Southdown section, found a ready market, but the buying potential was very limited.

One of the reasons for the small number of buyers could be that the fair is held too early. Another put forward is that with the dry conditions, many farmers have curtailed their purchase of ewes until after further rain. ' One auctioneer of many years’ standing said that it seemed to follow that when ewes were dear, rams were cheap. This also worked in the reverse. Ah annoying practice which delayed the start, of the sale was the tardiness of some vendors in yarding their sheep in time for the inspection. It is believed that steps will be taken next year to stop this practice. Top price of the fair of 85gns was paid by an agent for an Ashburton farrper for a oneshear Southdown stud ram entered by C. A. Adams, of Greendale. This price was 15gns better than the top price of last year, which also went to Mr Adams. The only other vendor to approach this mark was H; M. King (Ashburton), who received 50gns for a two-shear stud Southdown ram. The top Border-Leicester stud ram was entered by R. J. Low and Sons, of Highbank. This fetched 52Jgns. Only three of 10 pens of Border Leicester stud rams were sold. Eight of the 15 pens of Southdown stud rams found buyers. As usual, there was not much demand for the stud ewes offered. Southdowns More than half the pens of Southdown . rams were passed in. Of the 370 offered only 181 were sold.

The general standard of the Southdowns was very good and only six were rejected in the inspection. The rams were .in better condition and more even than last year. T. Miles, of Wlnchmore, topped this section when he received 27gns for two one-shear rams. In all he sold four rams at an average of 22gns. C. A. Adams again had great success, selling 20 rams at an average price of nearly 15gns. D. N. Chapman, of Rakaia, had an average price of just over 13gns for 19 rams sold. Two of these, offered separately. fetched 25gns each. Only one ■of the 10 pens in the Ryeland section was sold, and two-thirds of the Border Leicester pens were passed in. The top price of 20gns for a one-shear ram offered on account of H. M. King, of Ashburton, was double last year’s price in the same section. Several other pens brought good prices after spirited bidding, although many pens attracted little interest.

South Suffolks sold well, only 15 of the 48 pens not being sold. The top price of 14gns received by A. P. Bruce, of Ashburton, was 4gns below last year’s top price. There was a slightly better demand for English Lelcesters, and the top price of 12gns was paid for a single ram offered on account of W. J. Simes, of Ashburton.

South Dorset Downs were true to type and met an excellent demand, all pens being sold. Prices ranged from 7gns to the 22gns paid for an entry by R. and M. R. Barnett, of Dunsandel. The average price was about llgns. The only pen offered In the Suffolk section was passed in. Only one pen of three rams was offered in the Dorset Horn section and was sold for 6gns.

Crossbred Rams The only pen of Hampshire South Suffolk was passed in. but the three pens of Poll Dorset South Suffolks met a ready sale. Border Leicester Southdowns attracted little interest as did the Southdown Dorset Downs. Good prices, ranging from 11 to 20gns, were received by S. Kelynack for his entries in the Hampshire Down cross section. There were few pens offered in the South Suffolk Border Leicester section and entries of Southdown Dorset Downs. Ryeland sheep were all passed in. Southdown Border Leicesters sold exceptionally well, but interest tailed off towards the end of the sale when most of the last 30 pens were passed In. Top prices were received for sheep entered by D. J. and J. Stewart, which were well brought out and true to type. They received the top price of 20lgns compared with last year’s figure of ISgns.
